Joanne Curry has made a career of advancing the cause of higher education locally, provincially, and nationally and connecting the university with business and community. Her leadership in establishing SFU’s Surrey campus and helping to create SFU’s new vision of the engaged university has improved the university’s capacity to enhance the social, economic, and cultural well-being of communities. In her role as Vice-President External Relations and member of the University's senior leadership team, Joanne plays a strategic role in engaging with stakeholders and raising the profile of the University. She is the institutional lead on community engagement and is accountable for government relations at all levels, communications and marketing, SFU’s Vancouver and Surrey campuses, and a range of signature initiatives and units including SFU Galleries, SFU Woodward’s Cultural Unit, SFU Public Square and the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue external programs. Joanne has been instrumental in the development and implementation of SFU’s India strategy. In addition to experience in the biotechnology, banking and consulting sectors, Joanne’s past roles have included Director of SFU University Industry Liaison and Executive Director of a national network of centre of excellence in online learning which involved 30 Canadian universities. Joanne is currently a member of several boards and committees including the Burnaby Board of Trade and the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association. She holds a Doctorate of Business, Bath University, UK and was also awarded an honorary degree from Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
